This song was written to fill a gap in the Christmas service of nine lessons and carols, where there are very few carols to fit with the reading about man’s first disobedience and the fall.

It’s based on Genesis Chapter 3, rising from pain and sorrow to a note of joy, with the promise of the Saviour who will bring life to all.

Thorns and thistles, toil and hardship, sweat and pain,
Until the promised Saviour will come with Life again.

On a night of greatest sorrow, thrust out from Paradise,
Our first forefather Adam is lost and fallen from grace.

Cursed is the tempting serpent, cursed is the ground below.
Out of that perfect garden Adam and Eve must go.

Angels guard the garden with flaming swords held high,
Life’s song is now in discord where once was harmony.
